Who do I inform if my pet may bite or have aggression issues?

Should your pet become nervous when restrained, please let Dr. Gwin and/or his staff know PRIOR to examination. Even though your pet has never been aggressive, snapped at, bitten, etc., our exam requires eye-to-eye contact causing some pets to become anxious. Therefore, it may be necessary to muzzle your pet in order to receive the best examination possible. This is for our protection and will not harm or traumatize your pet in any way. Any sign of fear, growling, showing teeth, etc. will require you to place a muzzle before examination. If you are unable or unwilling to muzzle your pet, please understand we may be unable to perform an examination. Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated.

What if my pet does not like other animals?

Please check-in a few minutes early without your pet so we can work with you to arrange a scenario to keep your pet isolated from other animals.

How long does an appointment take?

It is always our desire to see your pet on time as scheduled. However, due to the limited options for ophthalmologists in Oklahoma and surrounding states, there is always the possibility for emergency appointments that could cause a delay to the schedule. On a perfect day without interruption, new appointments last approximately 15-30 minutes. Medical and surgical re-evaluation vary between 5-20 minutes. Early morning appointments are most likely to be on-time.

Can I drop off my pet for the appointment or do I have to stay there for the appointment?

We do not have drop off service. You will need to stay for the entire process of checking in, examination, and checking out with your pet. There is history and information about your pet’s condition that only you can answer. Also, after examination, Dr. Gwin will provide you with information and treatment necessary to care for your pet.

What if I have to cancel an appointment?

We do understand there are family emergencies or work obligations that can disrupt our best laid plans. However, when you do not call in advance to cancel an appointment, you prevent another patient from getting much needed treatment. We ask that you give a 24-hour notice wen canceling an appointment.

Can I keep my appointment if I am running late?

If you are running late for your appointment, please call our office. We will always try to accommodate your late arrival, but you must understand that Dr. Gwin has an extremely full schedule. Late arrival may delay your scheduled appointment time and you will be worked in as soon as possible, or sometimes your delay can make it necessary to reschedule your appointment to the next available date and time.

Do I refill my pet’s medication if I run out and how can I do that?

Do not stop medications until directed to do so by Dr. Gwin. You may call either of our locations, OKC or Tulsa, to request a refill on your pet’s medications. Medications can be picked up at either location or sent to you via U.S. mail. There is an $8 fee for orders sent by mail.

If you are past due on your recheck examination, you will need to schedule an appointment and allow Dr. Gwin to check your pet’s eye condition before refill medications will be dispensed. If your pet is on life-long medication, please understand that we are not able to refill any prescriptions 1-year beyond your pet’s last exam. By law, we must see patients once yearly to renew prescriptions. If you are unable to return to our clinic, please contact your primary veterinarian for refills.
